"Why of course the people don't want war.... But after all it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship.... Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they're being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country."

Yesterday (Sunday) was a great day - we started with a press brunch for Erol (at his house on Gates Ave), the Haitian press was invited and Erol spoke about his project and his experience so far, leaving Haiti and living in France for 10 years, and now he's here continuing his path, and I'm very happy to be part of it! Then we rushed to StudioX, where Jorge gave his Brazilian percussion class, and later we ran to the Laila Lounge in Williamsburg, where Peruvian madman filmmaker JuanMa Calderon showed the latest episode of his public access TV show showcasing Latino NY artists, which featured Magali, and Argentinian diva Coral, as well as a nice feature on our Orixás project, which showed me and Jorge and Magali and Erol playing here at home.

Making a Baby

Pretty soon I'm going to re-write CD Baby from scratch.

CD Baby, including the storefront, backend intranet, members login area, and various cron scripts is made up of 91,345 lines of PHP code in 1105 files. And I did it all myself over the past 5 years.

6 years ago when I started CD Baby, I didn't know shit about programming. I just knew some basic HTML. The first version of the site was done in Microsoft FrontPage (how embarrassing! It worked hand-in-hand with the shopping cart software, though, so I had to.) When people would mail me CDs, I would open up a template in FrontPage, and cut-n-paste their info into the template, and upload their page.

BRAZIL CLASSICS, VOL. 3: FORRÓ, ETC

Brazil Classics, Vol. 3: Forró, Etc.

When David Byrne first visited the Salvador/Bahia region in 1986, a new musical form that he never heard before amazed him. Dubbed forro, this dance-sound originally hailed from Northeastern Brazil, described as "a mixture of ska with polka" by Byrne himself. All of the album's tracks radiate a strong, positive energy, created in the most part by reggae-ish acoustic guitars, melodic accordions, and never-ending contagious rhythms. And although this musical style could be compared to America's zydeco sound, forro is intended mainly for parties. Brazil Classics 3 was compiled by Byrne himself and features the very best artists and compositions that the genre has to offer. Highlights include Luiz Gonzaga's excellent opener, "O Fole Roncou" (bordering on funk), Dominguinhos' laidback "Querubim," as well as the hyperenergetic "Festa do Interior" by Gal Costa. A superb introduction to the exotic style of forro, and highly recommended. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide

THE AWOL PROJECT
An Examination of the Bush Military Files:
For the past four years, Bush and his supporters have done everything in their power to obscure the facts concerning Bush’s military service. This series will reveal those facts, and in the process, reveal the character of George W. Bush, and those who defend and support him.
