MALIcool hot stuff
Nice mix of U.S., African sounds
By DENIS ARMSTRONG, Ottawa Sun
Nowhere is jazz's global influence more keenly obvious than in the unlikely but ultimately delicious pairing of legendary trombone player Roswell Rudd and Malian kora master Mamadou Diabate in MALIcool. Rudd, who's been on the American jazz circuit for 50 years, enjoyed a checkered career, playing with luminaries such as Archie Shepp, Carla Bley and Steve Lacy before burning out and abandoning the whole sorry business to work as a nurse.
Obviously, meeting Diabate and his West African musical traditions -- and perhaps even some spiritual reinforcement -- was all the inspiration the veteran American needed to get excited about music again.
That was clearly obvious at last night's Concert Under the Stars main stage gig.

when we come to a new understanding of ourselves and of things we've done or said in the past that aren't so pretty, it can be difficult to accept...
Accepting Ourselves and Others
Robert Elias Najemy
Love is the ultimate healing energy.
We lack giving and receiving love.
Our feelings of isolation and loneliness breed mistrust, misunderstandings, competition, antagonism and the whole series of health destroying emotions such as fear, anger, hatred, jealousy, bitterness, resentment etc. These negative emotions build up a personality complex of their own, and grow out of the control destroying our health and relationships.
Learning to accept and love ourselves and others despite our faults, weaknesses, habits and mistakes is a powerful means for healing ourselves and others.
By developing more deeply rooted feelings of security and self-worth, we enable ourselves to understand, forgive and love others and ourselves in more and more situations.
The following thoughts may help us in that process:

The effect has been the loss of billions of dollars, thousands of jobs, and that indefinable quality that once characterized American pop music.

Litany Against Fear
I must not fear.
Fear is the mind Killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye and see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.
